When You Hate the Rug, But Love the Giver
What do you do when you someone you love dearly presents you with a Persian or Oriental rug as a gift, but you hate the rug?
If you’re here, you probably already know that a Persian or Oriental rug is an extremely valuable piece of fine art. The person who gave it to you very likely paid a large sum of money in order to present this gift to you. The person who gave you the rug also more than likely spent a considerable amount of time researching to make sure the rug was the best he could find within his budget. He studied the attributes of a fine Persian or Oriental rug and made sure to buy the finest rug that he could.
In other words, considerable effort went in to the purchase of the rug and you know that the person who went to such effort loves you – a lot!
Alternatively, the rug may have been a family heirloom and had been in the family for many years. Either way, you appreciate the idea behind the gift, and you certainly don’t want to hurt the person’s feelings, especially after all of their effort. But the rug itself? You really do not like it!
So What Do You Do?
The absolute right thing to do is to accept the rug with joy, appreciation, and gratitude. Doing so honors the giver as well as their affection for you. You will create and maintain that loving bond, a bond that is far more valuable than the rug itself.
The next step is to display the rug proudly within your home. If you truly dislike the rug, store it properly, but make sure that it’s somewhere easily seen in your home whenever the giver visits you.
However…if you truly can’t stand the rug, but love knowing you have a fine Persian or Oriental rug, you may want to exchange it. Many Persian and Oriental rug dealers will be happy to do so, so long as the rug is in good condition. It helps us rotate our merchandise, and it helps you leave with a rug you actually love.
Another option is to go to the person who gave you the rug, let them know how much you appreciate the gift of the rug (a nice bottle of wine might be nice, too!), but that you’d like to see if there’s another pattern you might like better at the rug dealer.
If you know from the store that the rug was purchased at, that makes things even easier. You can then go right back to the source and see about exchanging the rug. As we mentioned earlier, there is a very good chance that other dealers are interested in case this is not a possibility.
