How to Give a Persian Rug as a Wedding Gift

Couple on their wedding day

Looking for the ultimate wedding gift? Why not give a Persian or Oriental rug to the happy newlyweds?

A Persian rug shows the couple that you’re certain their union will be one that lasts. It’s something that they will be able to pass down to their children and/or grandchildren. What’s more, those grandchildren will be able to pass it down to their grandchildren! If you were given a Persian rug as a wedding gift, why not start the tradition yourself and give your son or daughter the rug as a gift for his or her marriage?

Rugs aren’t normally what comes up when one thinks of wedding gifts, but a Persian rug is more than “just a rug.” It’s a true work of art! If you provide the newly married couple with an antique rug, it’s not only a work of art, it’s a precious gift and ready-made heirloom, which can increase in value over time.

Unlike machine-made rugs, a Persian rug will be able to withstand the wear and tear it will receive over the life of the couple’s marriage: pets, children, parties, moves to new homes, graduation celebrations, engagement parties for the couple’s children…and will withstand visits from subsequent grandchildren!

Here’s another great idea: Rather than give the Persian rug as a wedding gift (to be opened or given after the marriage ceremony), why not present a smaller Persian/Oriental rug before the wedding to be used during the wedding as a Wedding Rug?

Mr. Tavakolian of Behnam Rugs suggests a fine silk Qum or Tabriz silk rug become the centerpiece of your wedding ceremony.

The tradition of giving wedding rugs is an old one. It entails providing the rug for the engaged couple so that they may stand upon it as they recite their promises and vows to one another. They then take the rug home with them as they start their new life together (weave a new life together as a couple). It can be a wonderful daily reminder of their vows and the commitment they’ve made to one another as they go through life. A wedding rug also symbolizes that the giver of the rug hopes the newlyweds will enjoy prosperity throughout their marriage and that they’ll never know poverty because the rug allows them to never have to “stand on an earthen floor” (a traditional indication of poverty).

Many fine Persian rugs are woven in matching pairs; often parents will give one rug to one child and the other matching rug to the brother or sister. The reason is when family members come to visit each other at their homes, they will see the same exact rug and the rug will give them the feeling of unity in family.

You needn’t stop at just weddings. You can use your rug for baptisms, a renewal of vows, confirmations, bar mitzvahs & bat mitzvahs.
