Interior Design with Persian Rugs
If you are considering the purchase of a Persian or Oriental rug, or already own one, you may be unsure how best to present it in your home. How can you decorate with this type of rug? There are many ways! Here are just a few ideas.
- Lay the rug over other carpeting.
Even if you have wall-to-wall carpeting, you can put your Persian rug on top of it. Your rug can add more color or a certain atmosphere to a room by placing it on top of another rug. If so, it is best to put the Persian rug on a broadloom carpet with a short pile because if the pile is too long, the rug could move over time.
- Entrance areas, next to a bed, under a dresser. There are many spots to place your Oriental rug.
Smaller Oriental rugs can be used effectively in a number of places around the house. By smaller, we are referring to a 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 foot rug or even small runners. These rugs work well throughout the house, particularly in places such as entrance areas, next to a bed, at the foot of the bed, in front of a dresser, in front of a few pieces of furniture that are grouped together, as a wall hanging, before a fireplace, even draped over a dining room table when you are not eating or as a tablecloth.
In fact, draping an Oriental rug over a table has a long and distinguished tradition – when Europeans began importing these rugs, they were commonly placed on tables, not floors. Wide runners look good on walls in places such as alcoves and entrance areas.
Don’t forget the bathroom. Small runners placed in front of the sink work well.
When placing your rug, you also need to take into account the age, condition, and kind of rug. For example, delicate rugs would not be suitable for areas where there is a lot of foot traffic. Here, a heavier type of rug, one made with wool that has been spun by hand and colored with vegetable dyes, would work well.
- Oriental and Persian rugs work with a wide variety of colors.
You might be concerned about how your rug will fit with the colors of a particular room, but you need not be. The colors of the rug really do not have to match the hue of the room. Because the rug itself may have anywhere from two to fifteen colors in it, it adapts well to many different styles and shades of color. What you need to focus on is the overall look of the room with the rug in it.
