Choosing the Right Rug Material
Rugs come in many different materials, and each has its advantages and disadvantages. This blog aims to clarify their differences so that you can choose the fabric that will work best in your home. The materials most commonly used include silk, wool, cotton, synthetic, animal skins, and natural fibers.
Let’s start with silk. Silk is often considered to be the most beautiful, due to the softness and sheen of the material. Silk rugs can also show the finest details. Silk rugs work best in lower traffic areas like bedrooms and formal living rooms. They also require professional cleaning and may show footprints. Silk rugs can last generations with proper care.
Wool rugs are strong, durable, and cozy, however they tend to shed in the beginning, especially if they are lower quality. They do well in high traffic areas and repel stains and water more than other materials. The lanolin in wool is a protectant that makes it stain resistant and static resistant, yet attractive to hungry moths. Many fine rugs combine a sturdy wool foundation with silk creating the beautiful design.
Cotton is simple to clean and more affordable than wool and silk. One thing to consider is that it may not wear well over time though. This means it is not ideal in high traffic areas. With proper care, cotton can last many years.
Synthetics, like viscose rayon silk, bamboo silk, and artificial silk mimic the characteristics of more expensive fabrics. They can be used in humid environments, and some can even be used outdoors! They are not easy to clean and do not do well in high traffic areas. Viscose rayon, or “art silk,” is a breathable, glossy replacement for real silk. As with genuine silk rugs, you don’t want to vacuum these with the beater brush.
Animal skins are a unique choice that can be truly show-stopping and durable. They do best in low- traffic areas and do not like humidity. They do show wear, so rotating is a must. Cleaning animal skins can be a difficult task, as if you don’t get to a stain quickly enough it can soak into the leather permanently.
Natural fibers include classics like bamboo, sisal, jute, and sea grass. These fibers are very strong but can also be coarse and difficult to clean. They do well in medium to low traffic areas like living rooms and can be damaged by harsh sunlight. Some natural fibers are Eco-friendly and sustainable but spills must be cleaned up ASAP. These fibers typically last three to ten years.
